Martin Allen, in the wake of his Gillingham side overcoming Barnet at the weekend, admitted he was very interested in the Barnet job this summer before The Gills came calling.
Allen returned to Barnet for a third spell at the tail end of last season and he guided The Bees to safety in his three-match short-term contract.
Following this, and an "amazing" feeling in guiding them to league to safety on the final day, he "really wanted" the job but no offer came: 'To stay up on the last day of the season, it was amazing, I was so happy.
'I really wanted the job here. I really wanted to be the manager of Barnet. I thought it was going to be a great opportunity.'
Barnet fans sung Allen's name at Underhill on Saturday in appreciation of him and this meant a lot to him.
Although he is of course delighted with his achievements with Gillingham so far this season and appreciated of Paul Scally giving him the opportunity: 'When the opposition fans start singing your name it's magic. I'm privileged that Scally has given me the opportunity to come here and put this team together.'
Barnet's loss has definitely been Gillingham's gain!
