Payne Set For Permanent Posh Switch?

Jack Payne's future looks as though it will be with Peterborough, however Martin Allen is "playing it cool".

The midfielder spent the second half of the season on loan with Posh, but wasn't able to help prevent them being relegated from the Championship to League One, of course the level that Gillingham will also be at next term.

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson has made Payne his "number one target" for the summer, telling The Peterborough Telegraph: 'I will try and sort something out with Jack and Gillingham, but it's up to Gillingham.

'To be honest apart from Jack I'm not really bothered about signing anyone else. He is an exceptional footballer who suits the way I like to play.'

Allen, as he told KentOnline, is yet to hear anything about an approach from Peterborough though!

With The Gills boss already planning for the midfielder to return for pre-season training at the end of next month. He said: 'As far as I know Jack will be back to train with us on June 26 and that's it. That's black and white.

'I have had a chat with Barry Fry (director of football at Peterborough) and he called me. He said Jack has done really well and that's how it was left really.'

Despite the relegation for Peterborough, and the promotion of Gillingham, you'd be surprised if the 21-year-old didn't complete a permanent move to London Road this summer really wouldn't you?
