Taylor: A Below-Par Performance

Taylor: A Below-Par Performance

The latest league one fixture saw Gillingham at home at the weekend as the battle to ensure they stay in league one continued.

Gillingham, looking to build on a run of five wins in the last six Priestfield games, suffered a 3-1 defeat to relegation threatened Crewe Alexandra on Saturday afternoon.

It wasn't a good enough performance by the Gills on Saturday with Peter Taylor admitting too much, bemoaning the 'below par performance' that too many players had with a chance of moving closer to another season in league one passed over.

The Gillingham boss said: 'Three points here would have seen us getting close to the line of survival.

'The players knew that, I knew that, I'm sure supporters knew that, but it wasn't to be. That was not a performance of the standards we've had. Too many players had a below-par performance.

'The reason we lost the match was because our performance wasn't good enough. It was a 'lacking energy'-type of performance, that's what I was disappointed with the most.

'We were happy playing long balls. We only started passing it better half way through the first half - I was expecting that at a second past three.

'I'm sure it happens all over the country - it makes football unpredictable.'

Crewe went ahead through Chuks Aneke early on before Amine Linganzi drew the Gills level, Aneke's second and then a striker from Mathias Pogba secured the relegation threatened side an important win.
